Lost In Transition
This body of work focuses on a collection of found postcards, all of which have been lost or abandoned through their transition. What interested me about collecting these postcards, was the process in which these postcards have been sent, and arrived or not arrived at their destinations and then become part of a strangers personal collection, which then makes us as viewers question the existence of it's author. At the age of 10 years old, I sent a message in a bottle out to sea along with my two younger brothers, 10 years later we received a reply from a lady in Norway who found our message washed up on the beach. To be on the receiving end of finding someone else's message, has inspired me to create this body of work, depicting only the personal messages we send to our loved ones. Scanning only the backs of these allows us to read into the personal messages of strangers and enables the written information to become more important than the front image, by adding a sense of narrative from the use of handwriting. Postcards have always fascinated me, as there are no means of privacy and our personal messages can be exposed to the public during the postal process. This body of work communicates, that we may not be conscious about the exposure of our messages for the whole world to read before sending a postcard.
